Effects of Ischemia, Reperfusion and Administration of Superoxide Dismutase and Catalase in Rat Jejunm on the Oxygen Toxicity
Ham Mi-Young

Abstract
Changes in activities of superoxide dismutase(EC 1.15.1.1, SOD), catalase(EC 1.11.1.6) and xanthine oxidase were observed after treating rat's jejunal segment with ischemia(group A), reperfusion(group B)and luminal enzyme (SOD, 1,000
units+catalase
1,000 units/0.2ml saline) injection followed by repefusion(group C).
@ES The results were summarized as follows:
@EN 1) In all experimental groups, the activity of Mn-SOD was similar to that in control.
2) The activity of Cu, Zn-SOD in group A and B was significantly higher than that in the control, but the activity group C was similar to that in the control.
3) The activity of catalase in group a was significantly lower that that in the control, but group B and C were similar to that in the control.
4) The activity of xanthine oxidase was significantly higher in group A, similar in group B and significantly lower in group C, as compared with that in the control.
The results suggest that ischemia could enhance the xanthine oxidase activity which leads the the production of oxygen radical in jejunum; reperfusion may recover the jejunum from the oxygen toxicity induced by ischemia; luminal injection of SOD
and
catalase may effectively protect the jejunum from the oxygen toxicity.
